IS 280 vs. IS 3975: Which Wire Standard Do You Need?

Indian steel manufacturing is strictly governed by standards published by the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS). For galvanized iron (GI) wire, two primary standards dictate quality, chemistry, and testing: IS 280 and IS 3975. Specifying the incorrect standard can lead to mechanical failure or cable rejection.

What is IS 280?

IS 280:2006 covers specifications for mild steel wire for general engineering, agricultural trellising, binding wire, and security fencing. It categorizes wire into soft, medium-hard, and hard tensile grades, and defines three classes of hot-dip galvanized coating: Light, Medium, and Heavy coating weights.

What is IS 3975?

IS 3975:1999 specifically covers mild steel wires, formed (flat) wires, and steel tapes intended for the armouring of power and telecommunication cables. Cable armouring wire must fulfill mechanical protection roles and double as an electrical earth continuity conductor (ECC). Consequently, IS 3975 mandates strict electrical resistivity limits alongside mechanical parameters.

Side-by-Side Comparison Table

Technical Property IS 280:2006 Standard IS 3975:1999 Standard
Primary Application Fencing, agriculture, binding wire, general engineering Armouring of underground power and telecom cables
Available Profiles Round wire only Round wire, Formed (flat/curved) wire, Steel Tape
Tensile Strength (UTS) 300 to 550 N/mm² depending on grade Strictly 300 to 500 N/mm² (ensures ductility)
Electrical Resistivity Not specified / Not critical Max 14.5 Ω/km (Mandatory for grounding)
Elongation Minimum 10% to 15% (for soft annealed wires) Minimum 10% (essential for cable flexibility)
Zinc Coating Test Mass-of-zinc stripping test and copper sulfate dip test Mass-of-zinc and strict uniform copper sulfate dip test

Which Standard Should You Specify?

Specify IS 280 if you are sourcing wire for chain-link fencing, vineyard trellising, barbed wire, poultry cages, or construction binding wire. Specify IS 3975 if you represent a cable manufacturer producing insulated power cables, control cables, instrumentation cables, or telecom protection systems.
